PLATE I
THE RESEARCH SKY
What researchers are working on: six months of arXiv artificial
intelligence and machine learning publications, one star per
paper. The whole corpus stays on the sphere in grey; one month
lights up inside it. Darker colouring shows more intense activity
around a particular cluster.

PLATE II
THE ATTENTION SKY
The technologies that caught the attention of AI commenters this
week, clustered and anchored on a background of the past three
months' trends. Cluster names come from a TF-IDF analysis aimed at
creating clusters based on lexical similarity (use of similar
vocabulary).

PLATE III
THE EMERGENT SKY
The evolving world of AI metaconcepts and buzzwords, clustered and
anchored on a background of the past three months' trends.
Clusters are based on shared embedding space, with colours
indicating whether a concept is emerging (gold), established
(red), or has become a buzzword (indigo) based on the
semantic-lexical name gap.
