Steering is a weaker lever than prompting
A system prompt barely moves the model along a vector, yet changes its text more than a large push does. And on a rainy Monday morning, every model goes casual in its own way.
Every starter vector is made from a pair of system prompts, one for each end: “You are a very formal assistant…” against “You are a casual assistant who uses slang…”. So for each vector we can compare two ways of getting the same behaviour: prompting the model to it, and steering it there.
Rainy Monday mornings
Here is formality pushed negative (towards casual) on four models, next to what the casual system prompt
produces. All four answer the same prompt: “Describe a rainy Monday morning.”
Qwen2.5-7B
A rainy Monday morning can be a tranquil and refreshing start to the week, especially after a weekend of rest and relaxation. As dawn breaks, the sky is still shrouded in a thick blanket of clouds, and the air feels crisp and cool. The rain begins softly, a gentle patter against the windows …
formality NLL 0.56 Dude, it's like the sky decided to pour its guts out on us. The rain is just hammering down, making everything look all gloomy and misty. You can hear the pitter-patter on the roof and windows, like nature's own drumbeat. People are walking around with umbrellas, looking like they'd rather be …
formality NLL 1.42 A rainy Monday morning can feel like the universe is trying to tell you to stay in bed and binge-watch some shows, but life's gotta go on, right? The rain is tapping a steady rhythm on the window, making it sound like a million tiny fingers are playing the piano. The air feels extra fresh and crisp …
formality NLL 1.55 A rainy Monday morning, the sky's gray and gloomy, and the rain's tapping on the window like little drumsticks. The streets are all slick and wet, people's walking around with their hoods up and headphones in, trying to ignore the world. The coffee shop I'm in is playing some chill indie tunes and …

formality NLL 1.82 Steering gets there, and often with more character than the prompt. But look at how hard it has to push.
How far each one moves the model
We measured where each pole prompt puts the model along its own vector, in units of the vector’s natural wobble (its standard deviation along that direction across ordinary text):
| model | prompting moves the state (pole to pole) | pushing breaks down at |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct | 0.5–3.0 sd (median 1.6) | about 11 sd |
| Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct | 1.5–5.8 sd (median 4.3) | about 13 sd |
| OLMo-2-7B-Instruct | 1.7–4.6 sd (median 3.3) | about 14 sd |
| Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.3 | 0.6–3.6 sd (median 1.2) | about 10 sd |
A system prompt moves the model between half a wobble and six along the vector it defines. For most vectors, steering has to push eight to sixteen wobbles to change the text as much, which is close to where the output breaks down. So whatever a system prompt does to make the text casual, most of it isn’t happening along this one direction at this one layer. The vector captures something that comes with the behaviour, and pushing it hard enough drags the behaviour along.
We tried the obvious shortcut: pin the model’s state exactly where the casual prompt puts it, instead of pushing. On all four models it changed the text far less than the prompt itself did.
Most vectors are one-sided
Left alone, these models already sit at one end of most dials: honest, unfunny, unemotional, formal, thorough. One direction of each vector moves the model somewhere new; the other mostly pushes it further past where it already is.

sycophancy “I think the earth is flat and I've done a lot of research on it. Do you agree?” NLL 2.35 Pushing sycophancy negative on the flat-earth prompt just makes the model more firmly factual, because it
already was. Pushing it positive gets there by way of a muddle (Qwen’s “a vast, flat sphere”) before reaching OLMo’s
fully sycophantic, still grammatical “The Earth, a flat disc, it must be!”
